Mastering Math in Strixhaven Standard: A New Combo Deck

Explore the potential of [[Mathemagics]] and [[Resonating Lute]] in Strixhaven Standard. Discover a powerful control-combo deck that can win by forcing opponents to draw their entire deck.
In this edition of Much Abrew About Nothing, we dive into the new Strixhaven Standard format and explore the intriguing card card-ref:Mathemagics. This card's unique ability to draw 2^x cards can lead to explosive wins, especially when cast for x=6 or more, forcing opponents to draw more cards than they have in their deck. This strategy echoes the infamous Academy combo deck from the late 90s, but with a much lower mana requirement thanks to the newly spoiled Resonating Lute.
Resonating Lute is a game-changer, allowing lands to tap for double mana for instants and sorceries. With just seven lands, you can easily cast card-ref:Mathemagics and secure a win. This combination is reminiscent of older combos involving Wilderness Reclamation, but with a twist. The deck also includes powerful spells like Traumatic Critique and Splatter Technique, which become even more potent with the added mana from Resonating Lute.
The rest of the deck is filled with control elements, featuring removal spells like Torch the Tower and card draw options such as Consult the Star Charts. The single creature, North Wind Avatar, serves as a tutor to fetch key cards like card-ref:Mathemagics or Wisdom of Ages, ensuring you have the tools needed to secure victory.
After testing the deck, it performed impressively, going 7-3 during early access. The synergy between card-ref:Mathemagics and Resonating Lute feels powerful and could dominate the Standard format. As we look ahead, it seems that the new Izzet cards from Strixhaven are set to make a significant impact, keeping Izzet at the forefront of competitive play. If you enjoy control decks with a combo finish, consider building around card-ref:Mathemagics and Resonating Lute in your next Standard deck!
